Building a better Boronia

We are building a better Boronia by 2040.

About

We are bringing growth to Boronia whilst preserving and protecting residential and community areas.

Revitalising Boronia is part of the Victorian Government's Suburban Revitalisation program.

Boronia Renewal Strategy

The Boronia Renewal Strategy provides a framework for growth in Boronia over the next 20 years, focusing on:

  • economic development and investment
  • land use
  • building and development
  • transport
  • public spaces
  • community wellbeing
  • infrastructure.

View the Boronia Renewal Strategy

Previously, Council adopted the Boronia Structure Plan in 2006 and updated in March 2012. This plan has been replaced by the Boronia Renewal Strategy 2019 (revised 2021).

Projects

There are a number of projects underway, including:

Beautifying Boronia

3 large-scale murals will be commissioned on sites in Boronia.

We will work with property owners to confirm the sites.

These murals will benefit local residents, traders, and visitors of Boronia by:

  • improving the local aesthetic
  • preventing graffiti
  • increasing the community's perception of safety.

This project is funded by the Victorian Government's Suburban Revitalisation program and will be completed in early 2022.

Boronia Big Flix Festival

Boronia Big Flix Festival is a series of free community events for families in Knox.

Knox residents enjoyed family-friendly movies under the stars across 3 weekends in March and April 2022.

Big Flix is an all ages, family friendly, smoke and drug free event. Entry is free.

Local traders were given an opportunity to be involved by offering takeaway food and local suppliers will be sought for event management, production, infrastructure and amenity supply.

This project was funded by the Victorian Government's Suburban Revitalisation program and was completed in in April 2022.

Boronia Community Breakfast program

This program will offer free community breakfasts 5 days a week.

Hosted by Knox Infolink and partner organisations, the breakfasts will be open to community members who are in need.

This work will provide support for vulnerable people living in and around Boronia by:

  • increasing the opportunities for improved quality of life
  • connections to the community
  • access to services and support networks.

This project is funded by the Victorian Government's Suburban Revitalisation program and will be completed in mid 2022.

Boronia Revitalisation Community Grant Fund

The Boronia Revitalisation Community Grant Fund is available to assist community groups and not-for profit organisations in Boronia with the purchase of appliances and electrical equipment.

Applications for this grant opened on 13 October 2021 and closed on 12 November 2021.

This project is funded by the Victorian Government's Suburban Revitalisation program.

Business facade upgrades

Businesses in the Boronia Activity Centre can apply for a grant to increase the visual appeal of Boronia shopfronts.

The grants are co-contribution grants up to $5,000 and will be offered over 2 rounds.

This project will:

  • contribute to the beautification of the area
  • enhance amenity and perceptions of safety
  • increase patronage and visitation
  • reduce graffiti.

This project is funded by the Victorian Government's Suburban Revitalisation program.

Round 1 is anticipated to be completed in early 2022 and round 2 will be completed by mid 2022.

Erica Avenue streetscape renewal

Erica Avenue is located between Boronia Junction and Boronia Village, in the heart of Boronia.

It is an important link for public transport users and local businesses in the area.

With the assistance of the Victorian Government, we are planning to revitalise Erica Avenue with:

  • landscaping
  • new street furniture
  • paving.

The streetscape works will:

  • enhance pedestrian and cyclist accessibility
  • provide better connections to the Boronia Train station
  • provide opportunities for outdoor dining, daytime and evening activities
  • create a more vibrant and pleasant space.

This project is funded by the Victorian Government's Suburban Revitalisation program and is expected to be completed by mid 2022.

Green spine corridor concept design

A key priority in the Boronia Renewal Strategy is the development of a Green Spine Corridor along Genista Avenue, Chandler Road and part of Tormore Reserve.

This project will see the development of concept designs for the Green Spine Corridor.

A Green Spine Corridor will deliver active transport connections and sustainable travel infrastructure in Boronia.

This project is funded by the Victorian Government's Suburban Revitalisation program and is expected to be completed in early 2022.

Lupton Way shared zone and public art lighting

Council sought community feedback in early 2020 on a concept plan to inform the development of a detailed design for Lupton Way.

Council implemented the design to improve the accessibility of Lupton Way, so that the space is more inviting and pedestrian friendly. The project was delivered in 2022.

Boronia Park Masterplan

We are developing a masterplan for Boronia Park to:

  • create more green space
  • provide connectivity between shopping precincts, public transport and shared pathways.
My Generation program

My Generation is a program that will bring together younger and older community members in Boronia to address ageism and discrimination through a range of intergenerational activities.

Activities will be co-designed by stakeholders and may include:

  • community choirs
  • teatime club
  • creative arts projects.

This project is funded by the Victorian Government's Suburban Revitalisation program and is expected to be completed by mid 2022.

Pop-up events

A program of pop-up events at Dorset Square were held from Saturday 26 March until Saturday 14 May 2022.

The events included activities for children and families, and focused on:

  • activating public spaces
  • increasing visitation
  • fostering community involvement.

This project was funded by the Victorian Government's Suburban Revitalisation program and was completed in May 2022.

Replacement of Major Road streetlights

478 energy inefficient lights will be upgraded to LED lights on major roads in Boronia.

This will:

  • address local concerns of poor amenity
  • address perceptions of safety after dark.

This project is funded by the Victorian Government's Suburban Revitalisation program and is expected to be completed by mid 2022.

Wayfinding and Branding strategy

A Wayfinding and Branding strategy will be developed to address issues with movement and connectivity in the Boronia Activity Centre.

We want to encourage walking and cycling in the Boronia Activity Centre by displaying travel times and distances between key services and destinations.

We hope this will improve connections and support active transit.

This project is funded by the Victorian Government's Suburban Revitalisation program and is expected to be completed by mid 2022.
