Electoral irregularities

Knox City Council’s Chief Executive Officer was advised this morning that the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) has identified irregularities in the election for Baird Ward, which covers parts of Boronia, Bayswater and Ferntree Gully.

The VEC advised it would be making an application to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) for a review of the election result in that ward. We understand the matter has been referred to Victoria Police and the Local Government Inspectorate.

The VEC confirmed that as it has declared the election, the result stands unless VCAT makes an alternate determination.

Council has no formal role in the investigation of these matters and will fully cooperate with Victoria Police and the Local Government Inspectorate.

The VEC advised that anyone with information relevant to the criminal investigation should contact the Local Government Inspectorate or Victoria Police directly, or through Crime Stoppers.
