Looking after yourself and others during heatwaves

Did you know that heat kills more Australian people than any natural disaster?

Extreme hot weather can easily become hazardous, causing the body to develop heat cramps, heat exhaustion or heatstroke.

You can plan ahead to manage the risks of heatwaves for you and your family.

Recommendations to stay safe include:

  • check on people most at risk, such as older people and those with a disability or medical condition
  • only participate in activities during cooler part of the day and in known cool places
  • never leave an adult, child or pet in a car
  • test the heat of playground equipment with your hand before letting children play
  • provide clean, cool water and plenty of shade for your pets
  • stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

You can obtain more information on preparing for extreme heat via the Department of Health website.
