Get back to nature

Image

Completing the Knox Nature Stewards program has supported Sally Kimber (pictured) with her environmental science studies and inspired her to become a volunteer firefighter at her local CFA.

The 10-week program hosted by Council’s Biodiversity Team and run by the Victorian National Parks Association uncovers ways to help nature at home and through local volunteering. Participants gain knowledge, learn practical skills, and meet like-minded people in the local community. They hear from experts in ecology and botany and learn about climate change, citizen science, volunteering, ways to care for Country and managing private property.

“A lot of people simply don’t know how to get started on caring for the environment and I think that engaging with the community is a really important aspect of really making a tangible change,” Sally says. “The course takes you to local areas and shows off the biodiversity. It’s places that, if you didn’t do the course, you might not find because they’re hidden amongst the suburb.

“I will be looking to work in the line of biodiversity so meeting people who were also interested in or working in that sphere is a great way to make connections and do networking and cultivate more interest in that area.”
