Take time out in nature with Biodiversity Month

Explore the natural environment of Knox and tap into your inner citizen scientist this September.

Each September, National Biodiversity Month offers a chance to celebrate, nurture, and discover more about our environment.

This year, Council and local volunteer groups, are hosting free, family-friendly events, workshops, and webinars designed to deepen our community's understanding and connection with nature. The topics include citizen science, ways to contribute to nature, creating wildlife-friendly gardens, and the Kulin Seasonal Calendar. Information about environmental volunteer opportunities in Knox will also be available.

Some event highlights include:

Great Southern Biodiversity Blitz and Melbourne Biodiversity Blitz

Become a citizen scientist – participate and collaborate in scientific research and biodiversity monitoring.

Create habitat for birds and lizards

Whether you have a small balcony, courtyard, or a large backyard, everyone can create a habitat for native wildlife. Join the Knox Gardens for Wildlife program to learn how to support habitat for birds and lizards.

Learn about the Kulin Season Calendar

The Eastern Kulin Seasons Calendar describes seven seasons determined by the movement of the stars, changes in our natural environment, and the behaviour of local wildlife. So far, we have explored Iuk Eel Season (March), Waring Wombat Season (April – July) and Guling Orchid Season (August) in Knox. This Biodiversity Month, keep an eye out on our social media channels to learn about Poorneet Tadpole Season.
