- Safer streets for Boronia
Soon you’ll be able to walk and bike safely and easily through the heart of Boronia thanks to shared cycling and walking path upgrades.
In developing the Boronia Renewal Strategy, the community told us that improving safety and mobility in central Boronia was important. To meet this need we’re upgrading the path along Genista Avenue and Chandler Road, to Albert Avenue, creating a wider shared path to make it easier to access local facilities or enjoy a simple walk or bike ride.
The refurbished path network will provide defined walking and cycling routes and better access to shops, local schools, public transport, sporting clubs, and facilities in a way that helps us feel more connected and encourages us to get out and about regularly and easily. It is also hoped that the project will alleviate traffic and congestion in the area and through better access will help reinvigorate Boronia and stimulate further economic growth.
Some of the existing landscaping in these areas will not change, but more trees and plants will be delivered to enhance the path upgrade from 2025. These additions will provide natural shade, retain habitat for wildlife and improve the look and experience of using the path. Line markings and signs encouraging safe and respectful use of the shared path are also planned.
Road renewal works to replace damaged kerb and improve drainage along Chandler Road up to Albert Avenue will also be conducted to make these high-traffic areas safer.
Across November we are working with directly impacted stakeholders to understand how we can minimise disruptions. We will use this feedback to plan the construction schedule. Generally, the project will be delivered in three stages:
• Stage 1
Walking and bike path upgrade
Genista Avenue from Tormore Reserve to Dorset Road
Dec 2024 – Early 2025
• Stage 2
Walking and bike path upgrade and road improvements
Chandler Road from Dorset Road to Albert Avenue
Early 2025 – Late 2025
• Stage 3
Landscaping and tree planting
Genista Avenue and Chandler Road to Albert Avenue
2026 to 2027
Temporary disruptions will occur but will be kept to a minimum as much as possible, helping you maintain your daily activities and keep our local shops open for business as usual.
