Have your say on the future of waste in Victoria

The Victorian Government is adopting a uniform approach to household recycling and waste services across the state. Have your say about the changes by 14 August 2024 via the Engage Victoria website.

The initiative, Setting the standard for better recycling at home, is designed to help Victorians by simplifying the sorting of waste materials, enhancing recycling and reuse options, and reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.

The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) has drafted a Household Waste and Recycling Service Standard 2024 to facilitate this approach.  The standard will help mandate the management and provision of household waste and recycling services by all Victorian Councils, including Knox.

Proposed changes include:

  • A four-stream waste system, introducing a fourth glass-only recycling bin alongside the existing rubbish bin, recycling bin, and food and garden bin.
  • Standardised lists of accepted items for each bin to help reduce contamination.
  • Plans for kerbside collection of soft plastics - early stages.
  • Plans for the future use of compostable food and garden caddy liners.

Community feedback regarding the standard is welcomed and can be made online by completing a survey on the Engage Victoria website.
