Enhancing Gilbert Park

We have started construction works for a new wetland to improve Gilbert Park, Knoxfield.

The new wetland will provide many community benefits, including supporting the environment, stormwater management and recreational activities.

Council is contributing $855,000 with Melbourne Water contributing $200,000 towards the project.

Community feedback from community consultation in 2023 helped shape the final design. This includes the addition and locations of safety fencing, seating, and evergreen trees, as well as the materials used for the viewing platform.

The wetland is a key initiative in the Gilbert Park Masterplan 2017/18, which was endorsed by Council on 24 September 2018.

The Masterplan sets out a framework for upgrading the reserve to meet the current and future needs of our community.

Most of the works have been completed since the Masterplan was endorsed, including the skate pavilion, fencing, sports lighting, the play space, and the batting cage.

The wetland development, viewing platform and carpark upgrade are one of the last initiatives in the Masterplan.

The viewing platform construction and carpark upgrade are expected to start later this year. During this time, the gravel carpark will be temporarily closed. Updates will be provided when these works are due to start.

The expected completion date for the wetland development, viewing platform and carpark upgrade is late December 2024, weather permitting.

Following the completion of the wetland, we will plan a special community event to mark the occasion. Further information will be available in due course.
