- Road Safety Win For Wantirna South
Council’s push for road safety improvements to the intersection of High Street Road and Mowbray Drive in Wantirna South has been successful with $10M federal funding announced.
The Australian Government, in partnership with the Victorian Government, has allocated funding to plan for upgrades at this intersection to ease congestion and reduce travel times as the area grows.
Knox Mayor, Cr Lisa Cooper said Council had long advocated for traffic lights at this intersection to improve the safety of motorists turning into High Street, and pedestrians and cyclists using the crossing.
“The Mowbray intersection is well used by residents in the Wantirna South and Scoresby housing estates,” she said.
“There have been multiple collisions at this intersection involving vehicles entering and exiting Mowbray Drive.
“Providing a signalised intersection here will improve pedestrian and cyclist safety and access between the northern and southern estates, and connect with the greater Wantirna cycling link.
“Provision of a jump queue for buses at this intersection would also help prioritise public transport.”
Having advocated for intersection improvement since 2021, Council is now calling on the Australian Government to fund a broader range of road and transport projects, including the Dorset Road extension, Napoleon and Wellington Road upgrades, trackless tram between Caulfield and Rowville and Route 75 tram extension along Burwood Highway.
