Better animal management services for our community

We are inviting your feedback on our draft Plan to better manage cats and dogs in our community. Have your say by 28 November 2021.

In Knox, we have more than 25,000 registered cats and dogs. It is important that we balance the needs and expectations from both pet and non-pet owners. To ensure Knox is a great place to live and play for our entire community, we have developed the draft Domestic Animal Management Plan 2021-2025.

The draft Plan proposes to build and enhance existing Council initiatives and animal management services, to better manage dogs and cats in our municipality.

Some of the proposed new initiatives include:

  • increasing public education about responsible pet ownership to improve pet registration rates, address dog waste in public spaces, reduce pet nuisances to neighbours, and rules for dogs off lead in our public spaces
  • providing free or discounted cat and dog desexing to disadvantaged residents in 2022
  • exploring the introduction of a pet companionship program for senior residents living alone to improve health and wellbeing

The draft Plan was developed after reviewing community feedback and ideas, from more than 3,300 participants. In July and August 2021, we heard from cat and dog owners, non-pet owners, community group members and local animal businesses.
