- Finding Freedom In Knox
Across the world every day, thousands of people flee their homes in search of safety and freedom. For many, these journeys are long, isolating and dangerous.
Knox is a proud Refugee Welcome Zone (an initiative by the Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA)) and continues to be a new home for many who arrive in Melbourne.
Over the last decade, Knox has welcomed 440 newly arrived refugees to their now home – which make only 5% of Knox’s total new arrivals.
Local Governments play a vital role in assisting refugee settlement and promoting community harmony, with each person having a role to play.
“Getting laws and policies right is vital. But its local people and communities that are on the frontlines when refugees arrive, and whose welcome makes the difference – the difference between rejection and inclusion, between despair and hope “, says Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
This week, we share the story of Bogdan, Mohsen and Lun, who have all been welcomed to Knox as refugees.
Hear their story:
Every thing we do as a community to understand refugee journeys and support their opportunities to find freedom, will make a great difference.
