Gunyang Kangaroo Apple Season

December marks another season in the Kulin Nation Seasonal Calendar. There are seven in total, and each one describes the seasons according to the movement in the stars, changes in our local environment, species behaviour and weather patterns.

So what can you expect to see in Knox this time of year?

There are some unmissable Kangaroo Apple (Solanum sp.) flowering and Cherry Ballart (Exocarpos cupressiformis) trees fruiting. The insects are buzzing, and Cicadas are emerging above the soil for their next life stage. Some species of Cicada can even spend seven years underground growing and feeding on roots before emerging.

As for local wildlife, the Wedge-tailed Eagles will be active and soaring in the skies. While lizards and skinks will continue to sun-bathe on rock and logs.
