- Solar Farm Proposed For The Basin
The deadline has been extended for making a submission to the proposal being considered by the state government for a solar farm in The Basin.
The Minister for Planning is considering amending the Knox Planning Scheme to facilitate the development of a solar energy facility at 49 Basin-Olinda Road.
Council has made a submission seeking a balance between sustainability and environmental and community priorities. It is vital that development in this precinct strikes the right balance between innovation such as renewable energy and respecting the unique character of The Basin.
The 66.24 hectare site is predominantly covered by grassland and located within The Basin Rural Landscape precinct.
A key area identified in the Knox Green Areas and Rural Strategy (GARS), this precinct is known for its beautiful natural landscapes and high ecological integrity.
GARS sets a vision that this precinct will be protected as an ecologically significant area with a distinct natural and rural landscape character, providing a scenic gateway to the Dandenong Ranges.
Furthermore, the strategy prioritises the conservation and enhancement of the precinct’s biodiversity, waterways and landscape values, while supporting compatible land use such as sustainable agriculture, rural living, recreation and community uses that complement and enhance these values.
Council’s submission includes community concerns about the state government’s proposal, including glint and glare to adjoining dwellings and roads, and tree and vegetation protection.
The Minister for Planning is the Planning Authority for this proposal, not the Council.
Before making a decision, the Minister is undertaking consultation.
Consultation has been extended to 24 December. Submissions can be made via Draft Amendment to the Knox Planning Scheme – C202knox | Engage Victoria.
