- Make a House For Homelessness Week
Homelessness Week 2024 takes place from Monday 5th to Sunday 11th August.
To show your support for the urgent need for more affordable housing across Victoria, come to the Knox Library on Monday 5th August between 9am to 3pm where members of the community are invited to construct origami houses.
The last Census shows that, on any given night, at least 30,000 Victorians are without a home, including 6,800 children. In Knox, reports of people sleeping rough have increased, with figures to date being 88 reports, up from 54 at the same time last year. They’re living in their car, staying somewhere temporary like a tent or a friend’s couch, in a shelter or refuge, or have nowhere to go at all.
In addition, housing agencies are reporting large increases in people accessing their services. The Short Term Support Team at Knox have supported 341 people who are homeless or needing housing support over the 2023-2024 financial year.
There are 60,000 households across Victoria on the social housing waitlist and the numbers are growing every week. Knox is part of the Victorian Homelessness Network which is asking people across Victoria to fold 60,000 origami houses, and display them across various locations.
These houses can include a message of support or provide the community with an opportunity to share their thoughts on the impacts of homelessness and what having a secure home means to you.
The houses made at the Knox Library will be left on display during Homelessness Week. Materials with instructions will be available for community members to continue to create origami houses throughout the week. Information about homelessness and the need for more affordable housing will also be available.
