Statement of Commitment for Reducing Alcohol Harm

Knox City Council is committed to reducing alcohol harm, improving health, and enhancing safety through responsible management, education, and community partnerships.

About the statement of commitment

The Statement of Commitment for Reducing Alcohol Harm:

This statement of commitment supports one of the five key directions (Connection, Resilience and Wellbeing) in the Knox Community Plan and Knox Council Plan.

Our commitment

Knox City Council is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of our community by reducing alcohol-related harm.

Steps we will take that will have the most impact

Address alcohol use and community impact

What Council will do

  • Manage alcohol use on Council land, at recreation reserves, and in community facilities
  • Strengthen assessments of liquor licensing applications to consider community impact
  • Research and monitor alcohol harm data to guide decision-making
Foster responsible alcohol practices through collaboration and advocacy

What Council will do

  • Promote a responsible drinking culture within the Council and the community
  • Collaborate with Victoria Police, community groups, and businesses for shared solutions
  • Advocate for policy changes in alcohol regulation at the state level
Create safe, supportive and informed communities around alcohol use

What Council will do

  • Design public spaces to be family-friendly and manage alcohol consumption appropriately
  • Provide education about responsible drinking and local support services
  • Prioritise alcohol harm reduction in health and wellbeing programs

Factors influencing the commitment statement

We considered several factors when developing this strategy:

  • Data on alcohol-related harm in the community
  • Feedback from community organisations, businesses, and residents
  • State and national health and safety guidelines
