Ferntree Gully Community Arts Centre

The Ferntree Gully Community Arts Centre is located at the base of the Dandenong Ranges, nestled in a peaceful bushland setting with native gardens.

About the Arts Centre

We offer a program of activities for adults and children including:

  • art classes with a focus on pottery and painting
  • gentle fitness activities
  • school holiday workshops.

Adult pottery classes

Adult pottery

Our experienced instructors teach the art of ceramics, covering both wheel and hand-building work, decorative techniques and glazing.

Beginner, intermediate and experienced students are welcome.

Mondays

  • 12 pm to 3 pm and 7 pm to 10 pm
  • Term 1: Monday 24 February to Monday 31 March
  • Cost $150 (5 weeks)

Tuesdays

  • 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, 1pm to 4pm and 7 pm to 10 pm
  • Term 1: Tuesday 25 February to Tuesday 01 April
  • Cost $180 (6 weeks)

Wednesdays

  • 12 pm to 3 pm and 7 pm to 10 pm
  • Term 1: Wednesday 26 February to Wednesday 02 April
  • Cost $180 (6 weeks)

Thursdays

  • 9:30 am to 12:30 pm 
  • Term 1: Thursday 27 February to Thursday 03 April
  • Cost $180 (6 weeks)

Fridays

  • 9:30 am to 12:30 pm 
  • Term 1: Friday 28 February to Friday 04 April
  • Cost $180 (6 weeks)
     

Clay and firing (adult classes only)

  • Clay is available for students to purchase in 10-kilogram blocks at $16 per block
  • Clay firing is available with a 1-kilogram minimum
  • Clay firing costs $8 per kilogram for students, and $11 per kilogram for non-students.

Children’s pottery

Under the guidance of our experienced tutors, these classes offer a fun and creative introduction to the art of pottery, designed for children aged 5 to 15 years.

Mondays

  • 4:30 pm to 6 pm

  • Cost $100 (5 weeks)

Tuesdays

  • 4:30 pm to 6 pm
  • Term 1: Tuesday 25 February to Tuesday 01 April

Kids pottery parties

Looking for something different for your next child’s party? Try a kids pottery party. Children will create special clay pieces to keep, with help from our experienced tutors. Kids pottery classes are suitable for children aged 5 – 12 years.

  • Saturday afternoons (subject to availability)
  • 1.5 hours duration
  • Up to 10 Children
  • Cost of $198

Painting and drawing classes

Acrylics or oil painting

Learn a broad spectrum of oil or acrylic painting techniques including:

  • still life and landscapes
  • composition and dimension
  • the mixing and building up of colour.

Classes are suitable for beginners and advanced. Every student receives individual tuition whilst working at their own level.

Painting using watercolours

Develop skills and techniques using watercolours.

It is suitable for both beginner and experienced students.

Wednesdays

Adult textile classes

Adult textile mark making

This class explores mark making which is the process of creating lines, patterns, and textures on fabric.

Experiment with a variety of simple tools to make beautiful unique marks on papers and fabrics which can be further developed with stitch and structure.  

Students are encouraged to bring their own A4 binders and recycled materials.

Adult patchwork for beginners

Making a simple throw rug from squares, this course will introduce you to:

  • rotary cutters and rulers
  • laying out a design
  • straight or free motion quilting
  • binding

A sewing machine will be required for some classes.

Adult basic wet felting

Wet felting is a process that uses the combination of friction, soap and water to transform wool and silk fibres into fabrics and objects. 

This class requires a fibre pack which can be purchased for $30 as required.

Adult memory quilts - Kawandi style

Discover the art of creating mini memory quilts through hand stitching.

This meditative practice, inspired by Kawandi techniques, fosters mindfulness and creativity, celebrating cherished memories in a beautiful textile form.

Adult handmade natural brushes and mark-making

This class will explore the process of creating individual handmade natural brushes.  Collecting your own materials, fosters a unique connection to every brush. 

Discover mark-making, an asemic writing, as both playful and meditative practices.  

Students are required to bring found branches, recycled materials and Perle cottons.

Adult sewing classes

Adult sewing basics bootcamp

Master the basics of sewing in our beginner class. 

Build your skills and confidence in a fun and supportive environment. Learn new techniques each week, including:

  • inserting a zipper 
  • making buttonholes

Sewing machine to be provided for the class; but, if you already have your own, feel free to bring it along.

Adult sewing basics 101

Make a simple skirt or shorts and learn how to use a commercial sewing pattern.

This class will teach you basic sewing and fitting techniques, including:

  • Sewing seams and hems
  • Inserting zips
  • Adding darts

Sewing machines will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own if you have one.

  • 6 pm to 9 pm

50s plus strength training

Take part in a resistance training program for people over 50. The program aims to increase your:

  • bone density
  • muscle strength
  • metabolic rate.

Belly dancing classes

Adult belly dancing - foundation

These classes offer the first steps in Group Improvised Belly dance, an exciting style of belly dance inspired by the folkloric dances of the Middle East, North Africa and Spain.  

In each class students will learn: 

  • fast steps
  • slow movements
  • cues and transitions that create seamless movement together.  

Classes include warm-up, drills and focus on improvised dancing.

Adult belly dancing - ongoing

Ongoing Group Improvised Belly Dance classes build on a solid grounding of the basics, adding more complicated and challenging embellishments, variations and layers to the dance.  

Props and performance elements will also be explored.  

Students enrolling in this class must have completed at least two terms of the Foundation class.
