About community laws permits

The Knox Amenity Local Law 2020 requires permits before you can perform certain activities.

Permit types

Here are the application forms for permits issued under the Amenity Local Law 2020.

Permit to garage a long or heavy vehicle on private property

You need a permit to park heavy work and leisure vehicles on your property.

Skip bin permits

You must apply for a permit to place a skip bin on public land or on a road reserve.

You can apply for a one-off placement permit, or accreditation for multiple placements over 12 months.

Roadside trading permit

Roadside trading permits let you operate a food van or truck or a flower van from the side of a Council road.

Permit to discharge fireworks on public land

You need a permit if you want to use fireworks on public land. Only licensed pyrotechnicians can work with fireworks in Knox.

Real estate signage permit

Real estate agents and agencies need a permit to place portable ‘open for inspection’ and ‘auction’ signs on public land.

Temporary permit form

For all other permit applications under the Amenity Local Law 2020, you can apply for a temporary permit.

How to apply

To apply for a temporary permit, you will need to:

  • download and complete the application form
  • submit a sketch plan (if relevant)
  • submit a copy of your Public Liability Insurance
  • pay the permit fee.

Fees and charges

The application fee is $282 (this includes a $180 non-refundable application fee and a $102 permit fee).

This fee is current from 1 July 2024 until 30 June 2025.

Permits for election signs and materials on Council land

Election signs on Council land

You must apply for a permit if you want to display an election sign on Council land.

Applications are only considered after an election has been announced.

Election signs must follow the election sign rules and a fee may apply. You will also need $20 million public liability insurance noting Knox City Council as an interested party.
