Do I need a building permit?
Before constructing a new swimming pool, spa, or permanent safety barrier, you must obtain a building permit from a registered building surveyor. This ensures your pool or spa meets Victorian safety regulations and helps prevent accidents.
A building permit is required for:
- Constructing a new swimming pool or spa deeper than 30 cm.
- Installing a permanent safety barrier around a pool or spa.
- Making structural changes to an existing safety barrier (excluding maintenance work, such as replacing a damaged latch).
Temporary safety barriers during construction
If your pool or spa is under construction, a temporary safety barrier must be in place until the permanent barrier is installed. This temporary barrier must be maintained at all times to prevent accidents.
How to apply for a building permit
To apply for a building permit, you will need to:
- Engage a registered building surveyor.
- Submit detailed plans and specifications for approval.
- Pay the necessary application fees.
