Relocatable pools and spas

Find out if your relocatable pool or spa needs to be registered. Learn about safety barriers, inspections, compliance extensions, and potential fines.

What are relocatable pools and spas?

Relocatable pools and spas are temporary, movable structures that can be set up and taken down easily. If they can hold more than 30 cm of water, they must comply with Victorian safety standards.

Registration and safety requirements

If a relocatable pool or spa is set up for three or more days in a row, it must be registered with Knox City Council by the fourth day.

Register your relocatable pool or spa

Requirements

  • Install a safety barrier that meets Australian Standard 1926.1-2012. For more information refer to the Victoria Building Authority safety barrier self-assessment checklist.
  • Arrange an inspection by a registered building inspector or surveyor.
  • Obtain a Certificate of Pool and Spa Barrier Compliance.
  • Lodge the Certificate of Pool and Spa Barrier Compliance certificate with Council within 30 days.

Pools and spas erected for less than three days do not need to be registered.

Requesting an extension of compliance

If you need more time to submit a compliance certificate, you can apply for an extension. Valid reasons include:

  • Waiting for an inspection appointment.
  • Making repairs to fix non-compliant issues.

What happens if I don't register?

Failing to register or meet safety requirements can result in fines, including:

  • An on-the-spot fine of $395 for unregistered pools.
  • A maximum penalty of $1,976 for failing to register within the required timeframe.
