Roads in Knox are regularly inspected and monitored to provide safe driving conditions for residents and the general public.

Local and non-arterial roads

Under the provision of our Road Management Plan, Council is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all public non-arterial roads.

Local or non-arterial roads are mainly local streets or service roads with lower volumes of through traffic and mostly handle local traffic.

All matters relating to major arterial roads should be directed to VicRoads on 13 11 71.

Council responsibilities

It's important to report a pothole as soon as possible. This helps:

prevent road accidents
prevent damage to vehicles
Council to provide safe driving conditions.

Potholes can cause damage to vehicles including:

tyre punctures
dents or cracks of wheel rims
reduced suspension performance.

Report a pothole

Potholes on major arterial roads should be reported to VicRoads on 13 11 71.

We aim to inspect and make safe reported pot holes on Council sealed roads within 2 business days. We will carry out repairs within 32 business days, prioritised based on risk to safety.

Unsealed roads

We aim to inspect and make safe unsealed road maintenance requests within 3 business days.

After the inspection, we will give you schedules for fixing things, focusing on safety first.

Footpaths

Council is responsible for maintaining the footpath network within Knox. We carry out routine inspections to identify any potential risks, including trip hazards.

It is important to report any footpath hazards to Council as soon as possible.

We aim to inspect and make safe reported hazardous footpaths within 3 business days.

After the inspection, we will give you schedules for fixing things, focusing on safety first.

Report a damaged footpath

Street trees

Council is responsible for the planting, care and maintenance of street trees. For more information or to report a street tree related issue, see our street tree management page.

Roadside mowing and nature strips

Council mows roadside reserves along main roads and along reserve frontages.

VicRoads is responsible for centre median areas along main roads.

Drainage

Most street and easement drainage assets and infrastructure are maintained by Council.

We routinely inspect and maintain street drainage assets and infrastructure in line with our Road Management Plan. This is to ensure they are working well and do not pose a risk to road users and the community.

Removal of dumped rubbish

It is illegal to dump rubbish in or on road reservations or any property owned by Council.

Dumped rubbish that poses an immediate risk to road users and the community should be reported as soon as possible for removal by Council’s Work Services team.

Dumped rubbish that does not pose an immediate risk should be reported to Council Waste and Community Laws team for investigation.

Removal of deceased animals

Contact us if you are aware of any deceased animals in or on Council property. We will professionally and humanely remove the animal from the location.

Any animals that are microchipped will be scanned and the owners advised.

We aim to remove reported dead animals from Council roads and paths within 3 business days.

Street signage

Street signage on local non-arterial roads is maintained by Council and routinely inspected to assess it condition and working order.

Please report any Council street signage that may be:

missing
vandalised
an immediate risk to road users or the community.

We aim to replace or repair missing regulatory road signs within 3 business days. Regulatory signs such as:

Speed signs
Stop signs
Give way signs

All street signage matters relating to major arterial roads should be directed to VicRoads on 13 11 71.

Non-regulatory road signs

We aim to:

inspect missing or damaged signs within 3 business days
replace or repair signs within 10 business days.

Examples of non-regulatory road signs include:

building names
place identifiers

Street lighting

Council is responsible for the commissioning and on-going running costs of all street lights throughout the City of Knox.

To report a faulty street light, contact the local electricity distribution company.

Street sweeping

Council’s Road Management Plan recommends that local non-arterial roads are swept on a seven week frequency. Current service levels for the majority of the year are between 4 – 5 weeks with greater demand:

in summer and autumn
after major storm events.

The high winds experienced in summer and during storm events cause trees to drop excessive amounts of leaf litter. Council uses all available internal and external resources and support to keep up with increased demand for road sweeping at these times.

Residents are encouraged to help where possible by:

using the leaf litter as mulch in private garden beds
boxing or bagging leaves from Council trees for collection
placing Council leaf litter in your green waste bin.

Leaf litter on the nature strip should not be blown or placed on the roadway as this can:

be a hazard to road users
wash down the stormwater pits causing blockage and potential flooding.

We aim to inspect street sweeper requests within 2 business days.

After the inspection, we will give you schedules for fixing things, focusing on safety first.

Major arterial roads

Major arterial roads in Knox are the responsibility of VicRoads. Issues with these roads should be reported to VicRoads on 13 11 71.
