The community transport service provides bus services for Knox residents who are over 65 years and/or need support with transport.

About community transport

Knox City Council's Community Transport Program offers adaptable and accessible transport support for residents aged over 65 years and individuals living with disabilities.

Our aim is to empower the residents to maintain independence and actively engage in community life. The main goal is to deliver cost-effective assisted transport, addressing the unmet transport requirements for eligible residents in reaching retail and community destinations.

Our service does not cover transportation for medical or health appointments.

There are 3 types of service:

a regular bus service providing access to local senior citizen clubs, programs and shopping
an outings program offering day trips to interesting destinations around Melbourne
an opportunity for eligible seniors clubs and community groups to hire a community bus for social excursions.

Eligibility

You can use the services if you:

are over 65 years
a Knox resident
have a mobility impairment
have no appropriate access to transport.

Community shopping bus

The community shopping bus offers eligible clients the opportunity to shop at Westfield Knox shopping centre and be socially active with people living in their neighbourhood.

The service is for residents who:

live independently
have no appropriate access to transport
can shop without the help of a support worker.

The buses operate on a fortnightly or monthly basis and journeys cost $3.75 each way.

Day outings

We offer a regular schedule of community outings to:

local attractions
exhibitions
scenic drives
dining experiences
mystery tours.

Transport cost is $10.50 per outing but some destinations require a separate entry fee that you must pay on the day. You can bring or buy your own lunch.

No payment for transport is required on the day of the outing. An account will be sent to you every 4 weeks with payment details.

Excursions

Knox City Council offers four community buses to support not-for-profit seniors' clubs, senior community groups and organizations only.

Seniors' clubs within Knox are invited to hire these buses for planning and conducting outings for their members. Buses can be booked Monday to Thursday between 9 am and 4 pm. Bookings outside these hours (such as weekends) are subject to availability.

All bus bookings incur a hire fee based on the size of the bus and include a Knox Council driver.

Our bookings open in April each year for the following financial year. Eligible senior clubs/groups are allocated one excursion per financial year within each booking cycle. A rotation system applies to each group based on seasons to ensure fair and equitable access for eligible groups. Council strives to accommodate requests but cannot guarantee availability.

Buses are not available for individual use, private organisations, businesses, schools or on public holidays.

Red Cross Patient Transport Service is for people who are isolated and have limited transport options to attend essential medical appointments and social transport needs.

Eastern Volunteers provide volunteer assisted community transport to the elderly and people with disabilities to attend social outings, medical appointments and other activities.

St John’s Ambulance Patient Transfer Service provides transport services for medical appointments and transfers.

Bridges - Connecting People

Bridges – Connecting People offers transport services for medical appointments, shopping, banking, senior’s clubs, outings, planned activity groups, library, exercise classes and events.

EACH - Ferntree Gully gives support, advocacy and information on all aspects of need.

FlexiRide

As the successor to the former Telebus, FlexiRide is an On Demand Bus Service provided by Public Transport Victoria for the Rowville area. It operates only when booked. Passengers with accessibility requirements can request a pick-up from their door or an agreed accessible location.
